ABOUT THE COURSE

The NEBOSH International Diploma qualification equips health & safety practitioners with common occupational health standards and knowledge for maintaining the health and safety of workers wherever they may be working. The NEBOSH International Diploma adopts a risk management approach based on best practice and international standards including legal frameworks, local laws and cultural factors.

On successful completion of the qualification, graduates may apply for Graduate membership (Grad IOSH) of the Institution of Occupational Safety & Health (IOSH). This qualification is awarded by NEBOSH, UK's leading health and safety professional organisation.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

Anyone who requires a formal higher level qualification in OHS and who meets the pre-requisite requirements for enrolment.

DURATION

6 - 12 months research and self-study per unit. Please see learning options below. There are FOUR units within the IDIP, each unit is valid for a maximum 12 month period or two consecutive exam dates. After this period, a re-enrolment fee is chargable for candidates who were referred in the examination or chose not to sit the examination in the allotted period of 12 months.

PRE-REQUISITES

Candidates should have completed the NEBOSH International General Certificate (IGC) or equivalent. Candidates without the NEBOSH IGC will be required to provide their Curriculum Vitae for review and copy of their highest safety qualification.

COURSE CONTENTS

Candidates can take any unit in any order but it is recommend to take Unit A and then finish with Unit D.  Unit B and Unit C can be taken in any order.

Unit A: International Management of Health & Safety

Topics: Principles of health and safety management; Loss causation and incident investigation; Identifying hazards, assessing and evaluating risk; Risk control and emergency planning; Organisational factors; Human factors; Principles of health and safety law; Measuring health and safety performance

Unit B: International Control of Hazardous Agents in the workplace

Topics: General aspects of occupational health and hygiene Principles of toxicology and epidemiology; Chemical agents - evaluating risks; Hazardous substances - preventive and protective measures; Hazardous substances - monitoring and maintenance of control measures; Biological agents; Physical agents 1 - noise and vibration; Physical agents 2 - radiation and thermal environment; Psycho-social agents; Ergonomic agents

Unit C: International Workplace and Work Equipment Safety

Topics: General workplace issues; Principles of fire and explosion; Workplace fire risk assessment; The storage, handling and processing of dangerous substances; Work equipment; Machinery safety; Mechanical handling; Electrical safety; Safety in construction and demolition; Environmental pollution and waste management.

Unit D: International Application of Health & Safety Theory and Practice

Topics: An assignment based unit requiring candidates to apply the knowledge and understanding gained from their studies of Units A, B and C in a practical environment and to carry out critical analysis and evaluation of information gathered during the review.

EXAMINATIONS

Written examinations are only held in January and July each year as per the NEBOSH schedule.  IDUD examination submittals are four times per year.  An additional GBP£100 is chargeable for an administrative fee to KBAE per unit per candidate for any examination sat out-with the KBAE Training Centre such as at the British Council in a home country. The British Council invigilator fee is payable directly by the candidate to their chosen venue and is additional; fees vary from venue to venue. Candidates are responsible for ensuring that they contact KBAE to request their examination within the allocated deadline. Candidates must have completed their assignments to the satisfaction of their tutor to be allowed to sit any examination.

Where a candidate is referred in the examination then the cost of the examination re-sit, invigilator fee and re-enrolment is chargeable. If outwith the 12 month period any changes to materials will be chargeable to the candidate to continue their study.

PROFESSIONAL MEMBERSHIP

  • On successful completion of the qualification, the Diploma holder may apply for Graduate membership (Grad IOSH) of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH), the major UK professional body in the field (www.iosh.co.uk). This is the first step to becoming a Chartered Safety and Health Practitioner as a Chartered Member of IOSH (CMIOSH).
  • The qualification also meets the academic requirements for Member status (MIIRSM) of the Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM).
  • Holders of either the NEBOSH National or International Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety and either the NEBOSH National or International Certificate in Construction Health and Safety meet the headline entrance criteria requirements for Registered Membership (RMaPS) of the Association for Project Safety (APS).
  • Holders of the NEBOSH International Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety may use the designatory letters “IDipNEBOSH” after their name and are invited to the annual NEBOSH Graduation and Awards Ceremony in the year following the successful completion of their award.
  • This qualification has been accredited and credit rated by the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) and sits in the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF) at SCQF Level 10 with 47 SCQF credit points.
